Mechanical Advantages Of I-beam

Jun 01, 2022

I-beam has strong bending resistance.

The reason why the section is made into "I" shape is that the bending resistance of I-beam is considered. Because when the I-beam is used as a beam, when the I-beam is bent, the upper edge of the section is compressed and the lower edge is tensioned, and the middle is basically not stressed. The maximum stress acts on the upper and lower edges of the I-beam, so the upper and lower edges of the I-beam are made into flange plates, and the middle is hollowed out as much as possible to reduce the weight of the I-beam without affecting the resistance.
